The Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund has been set up to support place-based and community strategies for growth, and to help town centres realise their full potential.

Lambeth Council has identified a £4m project to create new workspace in the Brixton Rec, deliver public ream improvements for Brixton Station Road and its street market, and provide new shopfronts for retailers in the Brixton Rec. To help realise this exciting programme the council submitted a successful £2m bid to the Good Growth Fund.

This investment will aim to build on the success of the International House Workspace project, which sees meanwhile space operator, 3Space, transform the council-owned building into a workspace focusing on design, innovation and creativity. The project will bring 850 jobs to the area and is also aiming to invest in activating previously under-used spaces in new ways for public and community benefit.

The Good Growth Fund will enable the council to transform a large and underused storage space in the Rec to provide additional workspace fronting Beehive Place. The project will seek to create an innovative space for target sectors that deliver benefits for the local area and for local people.

The Good Growth Fund will also facilitate the re-opening and activation of the elevated walkways that connect the Rec and Brixton Station Road with International House. It will also reimagine and enhance the surrounding area of Brixton Station Road and Beehive Place to improve the environment for the street market, retailers and visitors.

Changes to public spaces and shopfronts will be co-designed with local businesses and people to ensure that changes build on the area’s existing character, and attract visitors, support retailers and market traders, and boost community cohesion and well-being.
