The Equality Commission brings together 12 senior figures, including representatives from business, local voluntary and community sector organisations and research organisations. 

Dr Shaminder Takhar

Dr Shaminder Takhar is Associate Professor in Sociology in the School of Law and Social Sciences at London South Bank University where she teaches a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses including the supervision of doctoral students.

Her research interests and publications are centred around race, gender, sexuality, education, political agency and social justice.

Shaminder was funded by the British Academy to conduct research on the under-representation of south Asian women in local politics which was published in the journal Women’s International Studies Forum.

She is an editorial board member of the British Sociological Association’s journal Sociology and her sole authored book Gender, Ethnicity and Political Agency: South Asian Women Organizing, was published in June 2013 by Routledge and was nominated for the Feminist and Women’s Studies Association book prize in January 2014.

An edited book, Gender and Race Matter: global perspectives on being a women, was published in August 2016 by Emerald Books. The book examines inequality and gender security issues in a range of global settings.

Currently, Shaminder is a member of the Local Government Commission launched by the Fawcett Society in May 2016 to gather evidence on whether local government is working well for women particularly in newly created structures.
