Report a concern about a child

Use this guide to help spot the signs of child abuse and report a concern.

Signs of child abuse and neglect

Here are some of the signs to look out for using the ABC method:

  • Appearance – Frequent, unexplained injuries, consistently poor hygiene, matted hair, unexplained gifts or a parent regularly collecting children from school when drunk.
  • Behaviour - Demanding or aggressive behaviour, frequent lateness or absence from school, avoiding their own family, misusing drugs or alcohol or being constantly tired.
  • Communication – Sexual or aggressive language, self-harming, being overly obedient or becoming secretive and reluctant to share information.

The list isn't exhaustive. If you can't see the behaviour listed above that you are worried about, you should still report it.
