The Proposal
We would like to create a series of new habitat which begins to link together existing sites for wildlife, and helps to manage rainwater, while improving the borough for local people. Please have a look at our initial overview of Lambeth Bee Roads projects to see the proposed locations, and planting methodology.
These are the first 12 areas we have identified:
Three Major rainwater and planting projects:
1. Atkins Road in front of La Retraite School, build out, and planting*
2. Tulse Hill Rain Garden – rain garden and planting on pavement in front of Tulse Hill Estate
3. St Matthews Estate, Rush Common, Rain Ponds and wildflower planting to create a countryside walk through housing land alongside Effra Road, A204 north of Crownstone Road, opposite Currys.
Five highway areas of short grass alongside roads converted to wildflower meadow:
4. Clarence Avenue: between roundabout and south circular
5. Thornton Road: in front of St. Bede’s School;
6. Thornton Road/Clarence Avenue roundabout: short area at junction to King’s Avenue
7. Covington Way, alongside the Rookery:
8. Durning Road: circular and crescent roundabouts
9. Park Hill: next to IQRA school
Two areas of woodland planting on roadside Housing Land:
10. Mostyn Road alongside Myatts Fields South Estate
11. Tulse Hill south circular one way system, backing onto Deronda Estate
*Atkins Road Build out and planting is a frontrunner project, so not included in this formal consultation. We would still like to know if you would like to get involved in planting.
12. Other grassland areas suggested by the public
Lambeth Bee Roads is centred in community partnerships. Working together we are bidding for grant funds for staff and resources to implement these projects. If funds are secured, the projects will be delivered through 2022 and 2023.
A Rain Gardens is a planted area designed to collect rainwater from roofs or roads when there is a downpour. It helps prevent flooding downstream. You may also hear Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDS).
For more information see reimagining rainwater in social housing for guidance.
The projects all support the Council’s Pollinator Action Plan and Green Infrastructure Strategy :
How to respond
We are interested in your opinions on the Lambeth Bee Roads, whether you like the projects, if you have any other suggestions, there will be lots of opportunities to get involved locally in delivery of these. If there is any detail we should be aware of, and if you would like to help with delivery.
