Lambeth Air Quality Engagement

The council will launch a period of engagement starting Wednesday 2 February with Lambeth residents and organisations around their experience and views about air quality in the borough. We will use the Commonplace website to gather views.  Responses will support the development of a new Air Quality Action Plan, which will continue throughout 2022 ahead of publication in January 2023.

Background information / Purpose of consultation

In recent years air quality has improved significantly in Lambeth, but we know much more still needs to be done to create a clean and healthy borough for everyone who lives, works, and visits Lambeth. Our forthcoming Air Quality Action Plan will set out how we will do so, in partnership with residents, community groups and local businesses.

The Air Quality Action Plan will be informed by the council's Air Quality Vision adopted in November 2021.

As part of this vision, the council commits to:

• Working towards World Health Organisation air quality target levels

• Reviewing air quality targets every three years, adjusting to more ambitious targets where air quality data suggests targets will be exceeded/achieved earlier than planned

• Being open and transparent with residents on progress towards those goals, publishing progress towards air quality targets every year within the Council’s Annual Status Report, and identifying barriers to meeting the targets, and steps that will be taken to overcome those barriers.

The current Air Quality Action Plan can be found here

Next steps after consultation closes

Following engagement with communities, we will produce a first draft of the Air Quality Action Plan. This draft will go out for full consultation  in July-August 2022.
