Project status: In delivery

The Brockwell Park to Gipsy Hill (also known as Rosendale Road) Healthy Route is key part of the Healthy Routes network. It will connect several:

  • neighbourhoods
  • schools
  • businesses
  • green spaces
  • public transport hubs.

Lambeth is committed to creating streets and neighbourhoods that are healthy, safe, inclusive and pleasant. We want to enable the community to travel more actively as this benefits public health and wellbeing, and is part of Lambeth's Climate Action Plan to become net zero compatible and climate resilient by 2030.

Healthy Routes is part of Lambeth’s Transport Strategy The routes are convenient, safe and accessible to all. They can be on quiet streets where traffic levels are low or on main roads where dedicated space is provided for walking/wheeling and cycling. They also link people with places they need to get to, such as:

  • schools
  • workplaces
  • shops
  • amenities
  • public transport.

The project has 4 phases:

  • phase 1 - between Brockwell Park and Turney Road
  • phase 2 - between Turney Road and A205 South Circular
  • phase 3 - between A205 and Park Hall Road
  • phase 4 - between Park Hall Road and Gipsy Hill station

Phase 1 - Brockwell Park and Turney Road

This phase was installed in January 2021, initially as a temporary scheme, which consisted of:

  • four new zebra crossings
  • a new two-way cycle track protected with traffic wands
  • a banned left turn for general traffic from Rosendale Road into Turney Road

As part of making this section permanent, we are proposing some additional improvements

Phase 2 - between Turney Road and A205 South Circular

Installation of this phase is currently underway and will include:

  • a new 3-metre-wide, two-way cycle tracks, protected with traffic wands along the eastern side of Rosendale Road, between Turney Road and the A205 South Circular

  • a new parallel zebra pedestrian and cycle crossing near the junction of Turney Road, connecting the existing cycle track delivered in phase 1

  • the pedestrian refuge on Turney Road, outside the entrance to Rosendale Primary School, will be upgraded to a zebra crossing to make crossing easier and safer

  • the mini-roundabout at the junction of Turney Road and Rosendale Road will be removed and replaced with priority T-junctions, at which safety is improved by vehicles on adjoining minor roads, giving way to pedestrians and to vehicles on the major road

  • a new parallel zebra pedestrian and cycle crossing near the junction of Lovelace Road, which will improve connectivity for residents and people walking/wheeling and cycling from Lovelace Road

  • the pedestrian refuge on Rosendale Road, adjacent to All Saints Church, will be upgraded to a raised zebra crossing.

Construction and resurfacing work

Construction began on 24 July at the Rosendale Road/Turney Road and Dalkeith Road junction. Works will move southwards along Rosendale Road, ending in advance of the A205 South Circular.

Construction works include:

  • Healthy Route cycle track extension
  • four new zebra crossings
  • resurfacing of Rosendale Road

A construction timetable has been created for residents providing further details.

Other work

A number of other works are being carried out including:

  • Additional safety improvement works at the junctions of both Guernsey Grove and Hawarden Grove. This is scheduled for January/February 2024 but further details will be shared nearer the time.

Phase 3 - between A205 and Park Hall Road

In this phase, the bi-directional cycle track will be extended south along Rosendale Road from the A205 to the junction with Park Hall Road.

Phase 3 consists of:

  • the continuation of the 3metre-wide two-way cycle track, protected with traffic wands
  • a new zebra crossing outside the shops
  • three new pedestrian and cycle parallel zebra crossings at the junction with park hall Road, to enable cycles to join the cycleway safely, and to facilitate safe pedestrian crossings.
  • one hour free parking outside the shops
  • raised continuous footways across the minor road junctions with Carson Road (both arms) and Elmworth Grove, to make pedestrian priority explicit, reduce motor vehicle speeds entering and exiting the minor roads and encourage drivers to take caution crossing the cycle tracks.

Transport for London (TfL) are leading on redesign of the Rosendale/A205 junction, with input from Lambeth. Designs are still being developed and will be shared as soon as possible. Lambeth and TfL are working together to install the junction and phase 3 of the Healthy Route at the same time.
