Street works and road works

Most of the works undertaken in the borough are undertaken by utility companies, who install, repair or renew their assets.

Update

Lambeth Council's Street Works team is aware of the increase in the amount of leaks and damage caused by Thames Water on borough roads.

This is due to the constant change of weather conditions across the last few weeks, from sub-zero to mild temperatures which is causing a failure of Thames Water apparatus.

Council officers have been actively reporting leaks that they come across during their daily inspections and also those that are reported to us. Officers are also out managing any traffic management/road closures associated to these leaks and making sure repairs are done swiftly and safely.

We have also been continually chasing Thames Water's senior management to fix the leaks and damage to our highway network and will continue to do so until these have been rectified.

If you spot a water leak on our streets, please help us by reporting it to Thames Water via thameswater.co.uk/leak or phone 0800 714 614.

Examples of most of the works undertaken in the borough are by utility companies, who install, repair or renew their assets. include:

  • Southern Gas Networks
  • Thames Water
  • British Telecoms (Openreach)
  • UK Power Networks
  • Virgin Media
  • G Networks

Any utility companies that work on the public highway must comply with laws, such as:

  • Safety of their works site and excavations
  • Standard of the reinstatement of the carriageway, footway, footpath and verges
  • Qualifications of the employees undertaking the works
  • Notification by these undertakers to the Council for proposed works

When a utility wishes to close a road or create temporary restrictions which will either enable them to complete the works safely and minimise disruption (such as creating temporary no waiting and loading restrictions), they have to apply for a Temporary Traffic Order
