Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs)
SPDs give additional guidance on some of the policies of the Local Plan, where this is needed. SPDs do not have the same status as the policies in the Local Plan but have been subject to public consultation and are taken into account as material considerations in dealing with planning applications. We currently have three borough-wide SPDs and one area-specific SPD.
Borough-wide SPDs
Lambeth Design Guide SPD
The Lambeth Design Guide SPD was adopted on 08 August 2023. The SPD provides guidance on the council’s policy approach to the design of the built environment (see Lambeth Local Plan 2020-2035).
It is in five parts – each covering a separate design topic:
- Part 1 Introducing Lambeth (PDF, 2.2MB) explains the character of Lambeth and the borough’s design intent.
- Part 2 Advice for All Developments (PDF, 3.03MB) gives general advice on all types of development.
- Part 3 New Buildings (PDF, 1.71MB) gives specific advice on new-build schemes.
- Part 4 Building Alterations, Extensions and Retrofit (PDF, 2.59MB) gives advice on building alterations, extensions and retrofit.
- Part 5 Basements (PDF, 1.35MB) focuses on basement development.
An adoption statement (PDF, 78.6KB) and Strategic Environmental Assessment Screening statement (PDF, 175.17KB) report have been prepared.
The consultation statement (PDF, 1MB) and second consultation statement (PDF, 1.34MB) set out the responses received to two rounds of public consultation during the preparation of the SPD and the council's response to the comments raised.
Lambeth Development Viability SPD
The Lambeth Development Viability SPD (PDF, 439KB) was adopted on 2 October 2017. The SPD sets out the council's approach to assessing development viability in planning proposals.
An adoption statement (PDF, 181KB) and Strategic Environmental Assessment Screening Statement (PDF, 337KB) report have been prepared.
The consultation statement (PDF, 625KB) sets out who was consulted during the preparation of the SPD, a summary of the main issues raised during consultation and the council's response to comments received.
Lambeth Affordable Workspace SPD
The Lambeth Affordable Workspace SPD (PDF, 301KB) was adopted on 28 April 2022. The SPD provides guidance on the implementation of Policy ED2 of the Lambeth Local Plan which secures affordable workspace from larger office developments in parts of Lambeth.
An Adoption Statement (PDF, 109KB) and Strategic Environmental Assessment Screening Statement (PDF, 176KB) report have been prepared.

Area-specific SPD
The council has one adopted area-specific SPD. This provides detailed guidance to support implementation of the Local Plan policies for Vauxhall.
