St. Leonard’s is the parish church for Streatham and one of the oldest churches in Lambeth. It is surrounded by a medium-sized churchyard containing numerous features of heritage, cultural and ecological importance.

The churchyard has been closed to new burials for some time and is now managed as a heritage and nature conservation area. It is also a Local "Site of Importance for Nature Conservation" (or SINC) for the London Borough of Lambeth, in recognition of its importance not just for wildlife, but also for people living in both Lambeth and London to enjoy access to nature.

Various environmental improvements have been made to the churchyard, including opening up boundaries along Tooting Bec Gardens and Streatham High Road to make it more open and welcoming. Further enhancements include planted native bulbs and hedges, which has been undertaken by the church community through their Eco Church programme.

The churchyard also contains a number of historically interesting tombs and memorials, and work is ongoing to restore as many of these as possible, as well as provide improved interpretation about the churchyard’s rich history and wildlife importance.
