Combined heat and power (CHP) systems are potentially a source of air pollution. Pollutants associated with CHPs include nitrogen oxides (NOx). They can also include particulate matter (PM10/PM2.5) and sulphur dioxide (SO2), depending on the fuel used. These pollutant emissions can have an impact on local air quality and affect human health.

It is essential that any new CHP systems installed in Lambeth meet certain emission control requirements in order to protect local air quality. The whole of Lambeth has been declared an Air Quality Management Area for breaching the air quality standards for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10).
