Hearing support service

Use this guide to find information and support for children and young people with a permanent sensory neural or long standing conductive hearing loss or deafness.

The LHSS will support children and young people with a permanent sensory neural or long standing conductive hearing loss or deafness. Support will be provided in homes and educational placements.

Diagnosis and assessment

All babies are given hearing tests at birth and the hospital will refer to LHSS if a hearing loss or deafness is detected.

If you think your child might have a hearing problem, speak to:

  • your health visitor, if your child doesn’t go to school yet
  • your doctor (GP)
  • the school nurse at your child’s school, or your child’s teacher.

They will arrange a hearing test for your child.
