Indigo Youth

Indigo Youth were the first applicants to receive funding from the Social Value Fund. They wanted to continue their work with disadvantaged young people in and around the Angell Town Estate by providing facilities, mentoring, development advice and career support.

The project focused on music, one of the most popular art forms in Brixton.  Six months were spent working with over fifty young people. Group one was fifteen local young artists who would have found it difficult to access the facilities and mentoring for free. A total of 496 hours was spent attending workshops and working with professionals. The workshops included song writing, poetry, videos, and photography. During the project these young people made music videos, created, and recorded their own music, You Tube channels, social network and uploaded their work to major digital music platforms. The fifteen artists now have the necessary professional tools to move forward with their careers. They have gained confidence and feel like professional artists. Two of the participants from this group have gone on to work with major music labels and have signed independent contracts!

Along with the development of group one a further 24 workshops were held for a second group of young people who are starting out in the music, poetry or podcast fields. Fifty individuals/groups were given access to free studio workshop space once a week. Feedback received from Indigo Youth states ‘the participants who took part have been mostly socially excluded from taking part or gaining access to these types of professional establishments and labelled as disadvantaged, because our team has the experience needed, we were able to spot the gap in the community and with the support of Lambeth Council we were able to fill the gap and give many the opportunity to change their lives’

We wish all of those involved every success for a bright future.
