When to apply

There are different deadlines for each type of school. If you miss the deadline you can make a late application but you will have less chance of getting a place at the school you prefer.

Primary school

Primary schools include primary, infant and junior schools, but each cover different age groups:

  • a primary school covers reception class and years 1 to 6
  • an infant school covers reception class and years 1 and 2 of primary school
  • a junior school covers years 3 to 6 of primary school

If your child was born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, they should start reception class, in an infant or primary school, in September 2020.

The deadline has passed, but you can still make a late application. Find out how to apply for an infant or primary school place.

Moving from infant school to year 3

If your child was born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013 and is at an infant school, you must apply for a year 3 place to start in September 2020. This can be at a junior or primary school.

You can also apply for a junior school place if you wish your child to move from a primary school to a junior school.

The deadline for applications has passed, but you can still make a late application. Find out how to apply for a year 3 place.

Secondary school

A secondary school covers years 7 to 11 of school. If your child was born between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009 you must apply for a secondary school place to start in September 2020.

The deadline for applications has passed, but you can still make a late application. Find out how to apply for a secondary school place.

Applying after September

If you move to Lambeth after the start of the school year you can make an in-year application for a school place in Lambeth. If you want to change your child’s school during the school year, you can also apply for this by making an in-year application. Find out how to make an in-year application.
